Class Summary:

Math has always been one of my favorite subjects. I am especially happy to work with students
on introductory algebraic concepts. At this point in their math studies, students are moving into
the slightly more abstract as they firm up their ability to utilize letters and symbols to represent
unknown quantities. These universal theories are foundational to so much of our everyday life.
My goal is to ensure that students are able to demonstrate their proficiency in each successive
skill set and that they are sufficiently challenged as they work. Therefore, I will be paying very
close attention to each student’s general aptitude and experience. I consider it a tremendous
privilege to walk alongside them this year as they learn.

Grading:
Students will be graded on the following assignments as we go:
1. Homework
2. Quizzes
3. Tests

Homework will be assigned each class and due at the beginning of each class. We will go over
the homework every day when we arrive. Because homework is always additional practice,
students will receive full credit if homework is complete. The only way they can lose points
on homework is if they did not finish it.
Students will need a green pen to self-score their homework each class. They will put a
star on the top of the page if they missed more than four questions so I can track
whether or not they are struggling.

Quizzes will usually be open book and will be taken from the official textbook.

Tests have been created by me and will either be assigned to be taken during class or at home
without notes or use of the textbook. Tests will include some of the questions from the official
quizzes/tests. I will endeavor to create and provide a study guide before each test.
Because we go over homework each day immediately at the beginning of class, tardiness
and absences will affect your child’s ability to keep up to date with their learning and will
additionally affect participation points and overall grade.

Class Materials:
● Student copy of textbook (Students need to bring to class every day)
● Ticonderoga #2 pencils – If you prefer to stick with solely American manufacture, you
could try companies like General Pencil or Musgrave Pencil
● Green pen – This is a “must have”
● College Rule Paper – This needs to be loose leaf and stored in a 1” binder
● Graph Paper – This will be utilized during the Coordinate Plane chapter only. Regular
homework cannot be completed on this paper.

● Basic Calculator – I’m okay if a phone is used as a calculator. Classes are usually small
enough that I can ensure no one is texting or playing games on the phone.
● Binder 1” minimum

Note: I expect all assignments to be submitted in a neat, complete, and timely manner. All
work needs to be shown on homework assignments.
