Course Description: Saxon Math 7/6 is a course meant for students at the average 7th grade, or high 6th grade level. It is designed to review and expand on previously learned concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, study math properties, place values, word problems, fractions, basic geometry, measurements, working with money, decimals, conversions, exponents, prime and composite numbers, greatest common factors, mean, median, mode and range, square roots, reciprocals, ratios, negative numbers, graphing, and least common multiples. The text has 120 lessons with hands-on investigation lessons after every ten academic lessons. Tests are given after every five lessons. These tests will be administered usually on Wednesday in class, but may occasionally be sent home to be administered by a parent. Math Facts Drills will be administered during the course of the year.
Required Textbook:
Saxon Math 7/6 Homeschool Edition; paperback, copyright 2005; ISBN#978-1-59141-319-6. The textbooks can often be purchased used from previous student’s families or on-line sites.
Required Materials:
-
- 2” Storage Binder with 5 dividers, compass*, protractor
-
- 12 inch ruler with standard and metric measurements
- binder paper.
It is also helpful to have 2-3 different colored Highlighters and scissors available.
Storage binders are to be kept at home and only brought to class when requested for grading.
*The compass needs to be good quality as the cheaper ones tend to slide open during use.
**Students will be using formatted pages for homework. I will provide originals for the forms to be used for homework assignments, and ask the parents to provide the copies for the students use. Please keep the originals in a safe place for further use during the year. An average of two sets (practice problems and problem sets) will be needed each week.
SHORT Teacher Bio:
My name is Judy Haughey, and I’m teaching Saxon 6/5 and Saxon 7/6 this year. I am a previous home school mom with 4 grown children and now grandkids who are starting the cycle all over again. I have been teaching at Vine over15 years, and have taught from the Saxon 6/5 level through Saxon ½ (pre-algebra). I also tutor these levels outside of Vine.
Teaching math was not where I saw myself all those years ago, but was definitely the path on which God has led me. I have been very blessed over the years by the students I’ve taught and their families. My desire is to help your students have a positive experience learning new math concepts.
Math is everywhere in our universe, world, lives, all of God’s creation. One of my favorite math quotes:
